A Welcome Message from the President
Hello Friends,
Welcome to the website of The St. Mary's County Genealogical Society, Inc. Our Society, a non-profit organization committed to the promotion and encouragement of genealogical and historical research, was established in 1977. Our mission is to encourage the preservation and maintenance of records of genealogical and historic interest in St. Mary's County, to promote their availability to the public, to maintain surname files, printed materials, and publications at local libraries for use by patrons, and to maintain liaison with and offer advice and assistance to local librarians regarding genealogy-related services. We believe in the importance of continuous learning and sharing our knowledge.
Our Society meets monthly (except for July and August), usually on the 4th Monday of the month at 7:00 pm at the St. Mary's County Memorial Library in Leonardtown, Maryland. Please check our program schedule on this website because holidays sometimes shift our schedule. At each meeting, we have a speaker and a time allotted to "share". The St. Mary's County Genealogical Society is a collection of individuals, ranging from beginners to experts, who have a passion for researching their ancestors - not just the statistics but the "fabric of their lives". Some of our member's ancestors had their roots in St. Mary's County, Maryland where we are located. But for many of us, our research takes us to all 50 of the United States and to many other nations. We share our experiences, our triumphs and our brick walls in hopes that we will be more successful in our research.
Our Society's files and printed holdings are presently maintained in the reference room at the St. Mary's County Memorial Library in Leonardtown Maryland. Inquire at the reference desk.
We publish a periodical, The Generator, four times yearly. The Generator includes articles regarding the science of genealogy, publication of records of interest to persons researching St. Mary's County, and the society's schedule of events.
